About Dunguaire Castle
A picture-perfect 16th-century tower house on a rocky point in Galway Bay at Kinvara, once a gathering place of the Irish literary revival; one of Ireland's most photographed castles, best admired from the shore.
Dunguaire Castle is a small, perfect tower house standing on a rocky point in Galway Bay beside the village of Kinvara, on the road south toward the Burren. Built around 1520 by the Hynes clan, it takes its name, 'the fort of Guaire', from a legendary king of Connacht famed for his generosity, and is thought to stand on the site of his ancient stronghold. The twenty-three-metre tower, with its crenellated top and walled yard, was restored in the twentieth century.
In 1924 the poet and surgeon Oliver St John Gogarty bought it and made it a gathering place for the leaders of the Irish Literary Revival, among them W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory and George Bernard Shaw. Long one of Ireland's most photographed castles, a lone grey tower mirrored in the bay, it has been closed to visitors since 2023 and awaits restoration, but it remains a magnificent sight from the shore and the road.
