About Collegiate Church of St Nicholas
The largest medieval church still in everyday use in Ireland, founded in 1320 and dedicated to the patron of sailors, where tradition says Columbus prayed, ringed each weekend by the Galway Market.
The Collegiate Church of St Nicholas, in the heart of the old town, is the largest medieval parish church still in everyday use in Ireland. Founded in 1320 and dedicated to St Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors, fitting for a trading port, it was enlarged over the following centuries and raised to collegiate rank in 1484, the same year Galway won its royal charter. It is now a Church of Ireland church, having been Catholic before the Reformation.
For centuries it was central to civic life: city elections were held inside it, and tradition holds that Christopher Columbus prayed here in 1477, before his great voyages. Inside are a medieval arcaded nave, a painted vault and fine stained glass; outside, the Galway Market of food and craft stalls fills the streets around it every Saturday and Sunday.
