About Galway Cathedral
The great domed Catholic cathedral on the River Corrib, built of local limestone on the site of the old city jail and finished in 1965, often called the youngest of Europe's great stone cathedrals.
Galway Cathedral, properly the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the city, rising in local limestone on Nun's Island by the River Corrib. It was built between 1958 and 1965 on the site of the old Galway Gaol, to the design of John J. Robinson, and dedicated on the Feast of the Assumption in 1965. Its great green-patinated dome, over forty metres high, is a landmark on the Galway skyline.
Often described as the youngest of Europe's great stone cathedrals, it blends many styles: a Renaissance dome and pillars, a Romanesque-style portico, rose windows, mosaics and a Connemara-marble floor. It is reached across the Salmon Weir Bridge, and its summer organ recitals have run since 1994. Not everyone loved it when it was new, and its bold modern grandeur has always divided opinion.
