About Salthill Promenade

Galway's breezy seaside promenade, 'the Prom', a two-kilometre walk along Galway Bay past the Blackrock diving tower, with a tradition of kicking the wall at the far end and long views to the hills of Clare.

Salthill, in Irish Bóthar na Trá, is the seaside suburb just southwest of Galway city, and its promenade, 'the Prom', is a two-kilometre walk along the shore of Galway Bay. It grew as a Victorian bathing resort, reached by tram from the city from 1879, and was reshaped into the walkway of today in the 1940s and 1950s. At its far end stands the Blackrock diving tower, completed in 1953, a favourite leap for swimmers.

The Prom has a much-loved ritual: walkers reaching the end 'kick the wall' for luck before turning back. On Christmas Day, swimmers plunge from the Blackrock tower for charity. Across the bay rise the limestone hills of the Burren in County Clare, and on a clear day the Aran Islands show on the western horizon, with famous sunsets over the water.
