About Dominican Monastery (Dominikanski samostan)

A Dominican friary built into the city walls hides a serene late-Gothic cloister and a museum of Ragusan Renaissance paintings, guarded like a fortress by the Ploče Gate.

The Dominican Monastery occupies the north-eastern corner of Dubrovnik's old town, beside the Ploče Gate, its massive walls built into the city's eastern fortifications. The Dominicans began the complex in the early 14th century, around 1301, and extended it over the following centuries, producing a mainly Gothic friary with later Gothic-Renaissance work. Its finest feature is the cloister, a late-Gothic courtyard of slender triple-light arcades attributed to the Florentine master Maso di Bartolomeo and completed by local builders in the 15th century. The single-nave church holds a large gilded Gothic crucifix by Paolo Veneziano. The monastery museum preserves major works of the Ragusan painting school, including panels by Nikola Božidarević, Lovro Dobričević and Mihajlo Hamzić, plus a painting attributed to Titian, while its library holds thousands of volumes and illuminated manuscripts. It lies opposite the Franciscan Monastery at the western end of the Stradun.

Did you know? The monastery doubles as a fort: when Dubrovnik reinforced its landward defences, the friars' towering outer walls were absorbed straight into the city's ramparts, guarding the eastern approach by the Ploče Gate.
