About Rector's Palace (Knežev dvor)

The head of state of the Republic of Ragusa ruled for exactly one month and could barely leave this palace, a fortress twice blown apart by its own gunpowder.

The Rector's Palace (Knežev dvor) was the political heart of the Republic of Ragusa, home to the Rector, the state council chambers, government offices, an armoury, a powder magazine and a prison. Its Rector, the ceremonial head of state, was elected for a single month and largely confined to the building during his term, a deliberate curb on personal power. The present Gothic-Renaissance structure is the product of repeated disaster: gunpowder explosions in 1435 and 1463 and the earthquake of 1667 each forced major rebuilding, with contributions from architects including Onofrio della Cava, Michelozzo and Salvi di Michiele. The porch is famous for its finely carved capitals, among them a depiction of Asclepius, and the atrium carries the Latin motto Obliti privatorum publica curate ('Forget private affairs, attend to public matters'). Today it houses the Cultural History Museum, with restored period rooms, portraits and the original prison cells.

Did you know? The Republic of Ragusa changed its head of state every single month. The Rector was elected for just thirty-odd days, confined mostly to the palace, and barred from the office again for two years.
