The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Dubrovnik. The present Baroque church was built between 1672 and 1713, replacing a Romanesque cathedral destroyed in the 1667 earthquake; it follows plans by the Roman architect Andrea Buffalini and was raised by Italian builders including Paolo Andreotti and Pier Antonio Bazzi, on a three-nave, Latin-cross plan crowned by a dome. Its Treasury ranks among the richest in the region, holding scores of gold and silver reliquaries, the most venerated being the jewelled, crown-shaped reliquary of St Blaise's head. A polyptych of the Assumption attributed to the workshop of Titian stands above the high altar. A popular legend crediting Richard the Lionheart with funding an earlier church here is unproven; excavations revealed Romanesque and Byzantine-era churches on the site long predating that tale.
