About Old Port (Stara luka / Gradska luka)

Once the maritime heart of the Republic of Ragusa, this curved harbour still shelters fishing boats behind a mortarless medieval breakwater, between two great sea-facing fortresses.

Dubrovnik's Old Port lies on the eastern side of the walled city and was the maritime heart of the Republic of Ragusa. Its mouth is sheltered by the Kaše breakwater, built in 1485 to a design by the Ragusan engineer Paskoje Miličević from large stone blocks set on wooden piles without mortar, to break the south-easterly jugo swell. The harbour is dominated by the Arsenal, the republic's shipyard, whose stone arches once sheltered galleys under repair; part of it now houses the Gradska Kavana café.

The entrance is guarded to the south-east by the Fortress of St John, whose lower level holds the Maritime Museum and Aquarium, while Fort Revelin stands just outside the Ploče Gate to the north. Although Ragusa's fleet rivalled Venice's, its largest ocean-going ships were later based at the deep-water port of Gruž, leaving this harbour to smaller craft, fishing and the arsenal. Today it is a departure point for boats to Lokrum and the Elaphiti Islands, and the Porporela pier is a favourite promenade.

Did you know? The Kaše breakwater sheltering the harbour mouth dates to 1485 and was laid without a drop of mortar, huge stone blocks resting on wooden piles, built to flex against the battering south-easterly jugo wind.
