About Minčeta Tower

The great round tower crowning the walls' highest landward corner, Dubrovnik's emblem of defence, shaped by two Renaissance masters and later the eerie House of the Undying on screen.

Minčeta Tower (Tvrđava Minčeta) is the great round tower marking the highest, northwestern landward corner of Dubrovnik's walls, and the enduring emblem of the city's land defences. It began in 1319 as a square fort built by the local mason Nikifor Ranjina. As artillery advanced, the fortification was transformed: from 1461 the Florentine architect Michelozzo enclosed it in a massive circular tower designed to withstand cannon, and the Dalmatian master Juraj Dalmatinac completed it around 1464, adding its distinctive crown.

The tower is named after the Menčetić family, who owned the land on which the first fort stood. Its walls reach roughly six metres thick to absorb artillery fire, and it crowns the wall walk at its highest point, giving sweeping views over the Old Town, the sea and the surrounding hills. In Game of Thrones, its exterior served as the House of the Undying in Qarth. It forms part of the UNESCO-listed Old City of Dubrovnik.

Did you know? Minčeta started life in 1319 as a square fort, then was rebuilt as a round tower once cannon arrived, because a curved wall deflects a cannonball that a flat corner would absorb head on.
