About Mount Srđ (Brdo Srđ)
A red cable car or a switchback climb lifts you 412 metres above the old town, to a Napoleonic fort, a war museum, and all of Dubrovnik spread below.
Mount Srđ is a limestone ridge rising to 412 metres directly behind Dubrovnik's walled old town, offering a sweeping panorama over the roofs, the city walls, the Adriatic and the offshore islands, including Lokrum and the Elaphiti. A cable car climbs from just above the old town to the summit; it first opened in 1969, was put out of action during the 1991–92 war, and was rebuilt and reopened in 2010. The summit can also be reached on foot by a switchback path or by road via the village of Bosanka.
The summit is crowned by Fort Imperial, built during the Napoleonic French occupation between 1806 and about 1812. It now houses the Homeland War Museum, documenting the 1991–92 siege of Dubrovnik, when a small Croatian force held this strategically vital high ground under heavy bombardment. A tall cross near the summit, rebuilt after the original was destroyed by shelling, and the hill's name, derived from Saint Sergius, recall the site's older and more recent history alike.
Did you know? The cable car up Srđ first opened in 1969 but was wrecked during the 1991–92 war. For nearly two decades the ascent lay silent, until the line was rebuilt and reopened in 2010.
