About Fort St John
The mighty fort at the mouth of the old harbour, once closed each night by a chain across the water, now home to the Maritime Museum and Aquarium.
Fort St John (Tvrđava svetog Ivana), also known as the Mulo tower or St John's Fortress, is the massive fortress guarding the entrance to Dubrovnik's Old Port at the southeastern corner of the Old Town. It developed from the 14th to the 16th centuries, growing from an early tower dating to about 1346, as the harbour defences of the Republic of Ragusa. Together with the Kaše breakwater offshore and a chain that could be stretched across the harbour mouth, it allowed the port to be closed to enemy ships at night.
Today the fortress houses two of the city's museums. Its upper two floors hold the Maritime Museum, founded in 1949, whose collection traces the seafaring history of Dubrovnik and Ragusa through ship models, navigational instruments, charts, logbooks and archives. On the ground floor is the Aquarium. The fort is part of the UNESCO-listed Old City of Dubrovnik.
Did you know? At night the Old Port was physically sealed shut: a chain slung from Fort St John across to the Kaše breakwater was raised across the harbour mouth, barring every ship until dawn.
