About Lokrum Island (Otok Lokrum)

A ten-minute boat ride reaches this forested reserve of peacocks, monastery ruins, a saltwater 'Dead Sea' for swimming, and, thanks to Game of Thrones, a replica Iron Throne.

Lokrum is a small, forested island about 600 metres off Dubrovnik's old town, a 10-to-15-minute boat ride from the Old Port. It is a protected nature reserve, so overnight stays are not permitted. At its heart stand the ruins of a Benedictine monastery and the church of St Mary, home to a community first documented in 1023, until the monks were expelled in 1808 under French rule. A persistent legend says they cursed the island on leaving, but that is folklore, not history.

Archduke Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico, held the island from 1859 and began the exotic planting continued by a botanical garden founded in 1959; the roaming peacocks descend from birds he introduced. Near the centre lies Mrtvo more, a warm saltwater lake fed from the Adriatic and popular for swimming, while the hilltop Fort Royal, a French star fort begun around 1806, offers wide views back to the city. Lokrum played Qarth in Game of Thrones and displays an HBO replica of the Iron Throne.

Did you know? Near Lokrum's centre lies a small saltwater lake called Mrtvo more, the 'Dead Sea', fed from the Adriatic through underground channels, warm, calm and shallow, it is a favourite family swimming spot.
