About Church of St Blaise (Crkva svetog Vlaha)
On the high altar of this Baroque church, a silver St Blaise holds a tiny model of Dubrovnik as it looked before the 1667 earthquake redrew the city.
The Church of St Blaise is a Baroque votive church on Luža square, at the eastern end of the Stradun, dedicated to St Blaise, the patron saint and protector of Dubrovnik. The Venetian architect Marino Gropelli built it between about 1706 and 1715, modelling its façade and dome on the church of San Maurizio in Venice; it replaced an earlier medieval church damaged by the 1667 earthquake and gutted by fire in 1706. On the marble high altar stands a 15th-century Gothic silver-gilt statue of the saint that survived that fire. In his left hand the saint holds a detailed silver model of Dubrovnik as it appeared before the 1667 earthquake, a rare record of the medieval town. The church is the focus of the Feast of St Blaise each 3 February, inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
Did you know? The silver St Blaise on the altar cradles a scale model of Dubrovnik as it stood before the 1667 earthquake, one of the only surviving images of the medieval city's lost skyline.
