About Dresden Palace (Residenzschloss)
The historic residence of the Saxon electors and kings, housing the Green Vault, Europe's largest treasury of Baroque objects, with dazzling collections of gold, silver, and precious stones.
The Residenzschloss, Dresden Palace, served as the residence of the Saxon electors from the fifteenth century and kings of Saxony until 1918. The complex grew over centuries around a medieval core, with Renaissance additions from the sixteenth century and extensive Baroque renovations for Augustus the Strong. The palace is home to the celebrated Green Vault (Grünes Gewölbe), one of the largest and most important treasury collections in the world. Augustus the Strong assembled the collection in the early eighteenth century; it comprises nearly 4,000 objects in gold, silver, amber, ivory, and precious stones. The Historic Green Vault displays pieces in their original 1730s Baroque settings across eight ornate rooms. The New Green Vault presents masterworks in individual display cases, including the exquisite Moor with Emerald Cluster, set with 665 emeralds, and the legendary Dresden Green Diamond. The palace also houses the Coin Cabinet, Turkish Chamber, and the Armoury (Rüstkammer).
Did you know? In November 2019, three thieves broke into the Green Vault and stole 21 priceless jewels worth over €1 billion, one of Germany's biggest art heists; the pieces were partially recovered in 2022.
