About Neustadt District

Dresden's bohemian north bank district, buzzing with independent cafés, bars, galleries and street art, anchored by the Golden Rider statue of Augustus the Strong.

The Neustadt, literally 'New Town', is the district on the north bank of the Elbe, directly across the Augustusbrücke from the Baroque Old Town. Though it was also damaged in 1945, it survived more intact than the Old Town and developed a very different character during the GDR era. Since the 1990s it has evolved into Dresden's most vibrant and creative quarter: a dense urban neighbourhood of nineteenth-century apartment buildings filled with independent restaurants, cafés, art spaces, vintage shops, and one of the best bar cultures in eastern Germany. The Äußere Neustadt (Outer Neustadt) around Alaunstrasse, Görlitzer Strasse, and the famous 'Kunsthofpassage', a series of imaginatively decorated courtyard passages, is the bohemian heart of the district. The Innere Neustadt (Inner Neustadt) closer to the Elbe is more formal, centred on Hauptstrasse, which leads from the Augustusbrücke to the iconic Golden Rider (Goldener Reiter) equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong, the gilded entrance to the Neustadt.

Did you know? The Golden Rider, an equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong gilded in real gold, was erected in 1736 at the entrance to the Neustadt and is one of the largest equestrian statues in Germany.
