About Brühl's Terrace
The 'Balcony of Europe', Dresden's famous elevated riverside promenade above the Elbe, lined with grand Baroque and Neoclassical institutions and offering panoramic views of the river.
Brühl's Terrace, the 'Balcony of Europe', is a broad elevated promenade running along the northern edge of Dresden's historic city centre, perched some five metres above the Elbe. Originally the fortifications of the Dresden Citadel, the terrace was transformed in the 1740s by Count Heinrich von Brühl, Augustus III's chief minister, into a magnificent private garden. Opened to the public in 1814, it quickly became the city's most fashionable promenade. The terrace stretches for nearly half a kilometre and is flanked by some of Dresden's greatest cultural institutions: the Albertinum art gallery at its eastern end, the Academy of Fine Arts (with its famous glass dome), and the Baroque Brühl Terrace buildings themselves. A grand staircase descends to Schlossplatz below. The views from the terrace across the broad Elbe, with the Neustadt skyline and hillside vineyards beyond, are among the most celebrated urban panoramas in Germany. The Canaletto view of this panorama made Dresden famous across eighteenth-century Europe.
Did you know? Goethe called Brühl's Terrace the 'Balcony of Europe', the view across the Elbe from this promenade is one of the most celebrated urban panoramas in all of Germany.
