About Pillnitz Castle

Augustus the Strong's Chinese-Baroque summer palace on the Elbe, 15 km east of Dresden, with remarkable chinoiserie architecture and a 250-year-old camellia tree.

Pillnitz Castle, Schloss Pillnitz, is Augustus the Strong's extravagant summer residence, set directly on the banks of the Elbe 15 km east of Dresden. Built between 1720 and 1724 by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, the same architect behind the Zwinger, the complex comprises three main buildings, the Riverside Palace, the Upper Palace, and the New Palace, arranged around an English landscape garden. The architecture is a unique fusion of Baroque and chinoiserie, reflecting Europe's eighteenth-century fascination with Chinese aesthetics: curved rooflines, dragon ornaments, and Chinese-inspired figures decorate the exteriors. The gardens contain one of Europe's oldest and most celebrated camellias, planted around 1770 and now over 9 metres tall, housed in a specially designed mobile greenhouse each winter. The castle grounds and the Decorative Arts Museum housed within are accessible year-round, and the Elbe steamer service connects Pillnitz to central Dresden, the most scenic approach.

Did you know? The famous Pillnitz camellia has been growing here since about 1770, over 250 years, and is specially covered by a custom mobile greenhouse each Saxon winter to protect it from the cold.
