About Albertinum

Dresden's gallery of modern art from 1800 to the present, housing Caspar David Friedrich's greatest Romantic masterpieces alongside Impressionist, Expressionist, and contemporary works.

The Albertinum is Dresden's premier gallery of art from the Romantic era to the present day, housed in a monumental late-nineteenth-century building on the Brühl Terrace beside the Elbe. The Gallery of New Masters (Galerie Neue Meister) occupies the upper floors and presents one of the most significant collections of German Romantic painting in the world, centred on the works of Caspar David Friedrich. Friedrich was born nearby in Greifswald and worked in Dresden throughout his career; his mystical landscapes, misty mountain vistas, lone figures before vast horizons, Gothic ruins at dusk, became the defining visual language of German Romanticism. Key works in the collection include The Cross in the Mountains (1808), Chalk Cliffs on Rügen, and The Stages of Life. The collection continues through Realism, Impressionism, with fine works by French and German masters, and into twentieth-century Expressionism, including works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The building itself was extensively damaged in 1945 and restored between 2006 and 2010.

Did you know? Caspar David Friedrich spent most of his career in Dresden, making the city the spiritual home of German Romantic painting, the Albertinum holds the world's most important collection of his works.
