About Augustusbrücke
Dresden's oldest and most historic bridge, rebuilt in its current form in 1727, offering the classic view of the Old Town Baroque skyline immortalised by Canaletto.
The Augustusbrücke, Augustus Bridge, is the oldest and most historically significant bridge in Dresden, connecting the Old Town with the Neustadt across the Elbe. A stone bridge on this site has existed since at least 1287; the current bridge was rebuilt in its present form between 1907 and 1910, but its predecessor from 1727, commissioned by Augustus the Strong, is the bridge that defined Dresden's classic silhouette. Standing on the Augustusbrücke provides the quintessential view of the Dresden panorama: the Frauenkirche dome, the Hofkirche spires, the Residenzschloss tower, and the Brühl Terrace all compose into the famous Baroque skyline recorded by Bellotto/Canaletto in the 1740s. The bridge is 390 metres long and has nine arches. It is the only direct pedestrian and vehicular connection between the Old Town and the Neustadt near the historic centre and carries an enormous volume of foot traffic. Historically, coronation processions, royal funerals, and victory parades all crossed here.
Did you know? The view from the Augustusbrücke towards the Old Town is the 'Canaletto panorama', Bellotto's 1740s paintings of this exact view were used as architectural blueprints for Dresden's post-1945 reconstruction.
