About Zwinger Palace
Dresden's finest Baroque palace complex, built between 1710 and 1728, housing world-class museums including the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the Porcelain Collection.
The Zwinger is Dresden's supreme Baroque architectural achievement, commissioned by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, as a pleasure palace and orangery. Designed by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann with sculptures by Balthasar Permoser, it was built between 1710 and 1728. The complex forms an immense courtyard surrounded by ornate pavilions linked by curved galleries, all decorated with an extravagance of Baroque sculpture, mythological figures, nymphs, and elaborate cartouches. Today it houses three major museums: the Old Masters Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister), renowned for Raphael's Sistine Madonna, Vermeer's The Procuress, and masterworks by Titian and Giorgione; the Porcelain Collection (Porzellansammlung), one of the world's finest with tens of thousands of Meissen and Asian pieces; and the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments. Destroyed in 1945 like much of Dresden, the Zwinger was meticulously restored over subsequent decades and remains the centrepiece of the city's Baroque heritage.
Did you know? Augustus the Strong once traded an entire regiment of 600 soldiers to the King of Prussia in exchange for 151 Chinese vases to add to his porcelain collection.
