About Ramparts and Towers of the Cité
Two concentric rings of curtain wall, about three kilometres long with fifty-two towers, form one of Europe's most complete medieval defences, restored and partly re-imagined by Viollet-le-Duc.
The Cité is enclosed by two concentric rings of curtain wall totalling roughly three kilometres and studded with fifty-two towers and barbicans, one of the most complete medieval defensive systems in Europe. The inner rampart preserves late-Roman fabric, about 1,200 metres first raised during the invasions of the third and fourth centuries. The outer ring, roughly 1,600 metres, was added in the thirteenth century under Louis IX and Philip III, doubling the wall and forming the corridor of the lices between them.
The concentric design, with the inner wall higher than the outer, was meant to keep siege engines away and trap attackers between the ramparts. Many towers carry restored timber hoardings and a wall-walk reached through the Château Comtal. Saved from a demolition order of 1849 and restored by Viollet-le-Duc from 1853, the towers were re-roofed with pointed slate now judged inauthentic to the region. UNESCO inscribed the fortifications in 1997.
Did you know? The defences are doubled: an inner wall roughly 1,200 metres long, largely late-Roman, and a thirteenth-century outer ring of about 1,600 metres, with the killing-ground corridor of the lices between them.
