About Château Comtal

The Trencavel viscounts' castle, sealed off by its own moat inside the Cité: a medieval fortress within a fortress, and today the ticketed gateway to the Cité's rampart walk.

The Château Comtal is a castle built against the inner rampart on the western side of the Cité, originally the seigneurial palace of the Trencavel viscounts. It developed from a palatium raised around 1130 and was enlarged through the twelfth century with a south wing and the chapel of Sainte-Marie. After Carcassonne entered the royal domain, the crown reinforced it around 1240 to 1250 with round towers, an advanced barbican before the gate, and a moat that cut the castle off from the townspeople.

Its entrance is guarded by a stone bridge and a double gate with portcullis, machicolation and two flanking towers, making a stronghold within the walled town. Restored in the nineteenth century by Viollet-le-Duc, the castle is now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux and serves as the ticketed visitor entrance. It houses a lapidary museum and gives access to the rampart walk and the timber hoardings.

Did you know? The castle sits behind its own moat inside an already walled town, a fortress within a fortress: the crown dug it in the 1240s to separate the garrison from Carcassonne's recently conquered inhabitants.
