About Basilica of Saint-Nazaire

Carcassonne's cathedral until 1801, half heavy Romanesque nave and half soaring Gothic choir, lit through rose windows by one of southern France's most complete medieval glass ensembles.

The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse stands in the southern part of the Cité and served as the cathedral of Carcassonne throughout the Middle Ages. It joins a Romanesque nave of round arches and heavy columns to a later Gothic choir and transept of pointed arches and tall windows, an early example of Rayonnant Gothic in Languedoc. Tradition holds that Pope Urban II blessed its stones in 1096, with the nave completed in the first half of the twelfth century.

The church is renowned for its thirteenth- to sixteenth-century stained glass, among the most complete medieval ensembles in southern France, along with carved capitals, gargoyles and statues of apostles in the choir. A funerary chapel and the tomb of Bishop Guillaume Radulphe were built from 1259. In 1801 it lost cathedral rank to Saint-Michel in the lower town and later became a basilica; Viollet-le-Duc restored it before working on the ramparts.

Did you know? The building changes style mid-stride: a dim, round-arched Romanesque nave runs straight into a soaring Gothic choir and transept, rebuilt after Carcassonne fell under French royal control in the thirteenth century.
