About Bastide Saint-Louis

Carcassonne's planned lower town, founded by Louis IX in 1260 on the Aude's west bank. A checkerboard grid of streets, markets and cafes facing the hilltop Cité.

The Bastide Saint-Louis is Carcassonne's lower town, the planned settlement on the west bank of the Aude that faces the medieval Cité across the river. King Louis IX authorised its founding in 1260, after the Crown seized the Cité from the Trencavel viscounts and relocated the townspeople down to flat ground. It was laid out on a regular checkerboard grid around a central square, now Place Carnot, and conceived as an orderly royal town.

In 1355 the Black Prince burned the lower town; it was rebuilt and fortified around 1359, though only fragments of those walls, such as the Saint-Martial bastion, survive today. A cloth-making industry made the Bastide prosperous through the 17th and 18th centuries. It is now Carcassonne's everyday commercial heart, home to Saint-Michel Cathedral, the Saint-Vincent church, and the markets and cafes of Place Carnot.

Did you know? The Bastide's tidy grid is no accident: it was a planned bastide town, laid out on a checkerboard plan around a central market square when Louis IX founded it in 1260.
