About Cathedral of Saint-Michel
Carcassonne's cathedral since 1803, a 13th-century southern Gothic church in the lower town, with a single wide nave, a great rose window, and a 19th-century Viollet-le-Duc restoration.
Saint-Michel is the cathedral of Carcassonne, standing in the lower town rather than the Cité. It began in the 13th century as a parish church in the austere southern Gothic style; French sources date its construction from 1247 under Saint Louis, with an enlargement in 1283. After the 1355 sack by the Black Prince, it was rebuilt as a fortified church and absorbed into the town's defences.
It became a cathedral only in 1803, taking the rank from the church of Saints Nazaire and Celse in the Cité. A fire in 1849 destroyed the choir, and from 1857 Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led its restoration, his first major project in Carcassonne, adding rose windows and reworking the bell tower. The single nave and roughly eight-metre rose window remain. Today it is served by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter and hosts the traditional Latin liturgy.
Did you know? Saint-Michel became Carcassonne's cathedral only in 1803, taking the rank from the church of Saints Nazaire and Celse up in the Cité, which was later made a basilica instead.
