About Canal du Midi

A 17th-century, UNESCO-listed canal from Toulouse to the Mediterranean. Carcassonne joined it only by an 1810 diversion; today a lock and plane-lined port sit by the station.

The Canal du Midi is a 17th-century canal linking Toulouse to the Mediterranean, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1996, distinct from the Cité's separate 1997 listing. It was conceived and largely financed by Pierre-Paul Riquet, a salt-tax collector who served as its engineer. Approved by royal edict of Louis XIV in 1666, it was built between 1667 and its opening in 1681, running about 240 kilometres through roughly 65 locks.

In Carcassonne the canal passes the lower town beside the railway station, where a lock and a port basin sit among plane-tree-lined banks. The town was not on Riquet's original alignment: Carcassonne was connected only in 1810, by a diversion that brought the canal into the town. The towpath is open year-round for walking and cycling, while boat cruises run mainly from spring to autumn.

Did you know? The Canal du Midi is its own UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1996, a full year before Carcassonne's medieval Cité received its separate listing in 1997. Two heritage sites, one town.
