About Porte d'Aude
The Cité's western gate, reached by a steep fortified ramp climbing from the river Aude and the Pont Vieux, offering the most dramatic view of the western walls.
The Porte d'Aude is the gate on the western side of the Cité, facing the river Aude and the lower town. It is reached by the Montée de la Porte d'Aude, a steep fortified ramp climbing the hillside from the river, historically the pedestrian approach from the Pont Vieux. Crenellated walls and a caponier-style outwork, la Grande Caponière, command the ramp, exposing any attacker climbing from the river below.
Once called the Gate of Toulouse, its semicircular outer arch is attributed to the twelfth century, piercing a wall line that follows earlier Visigothic and Roman defences. The surroundings changed in 1816 when the church of Saint-Gimer was built at the foot of the hill. Restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the nineteenth century, with his grey stone visible in the masonry, it is one of the two principal gates of the UNESCO-listed fortifications and a classic viewpoint on the western walls.
Did you know? Reaching this gate meant crossing the river, then a narrow bridge, then climbing an exposed fortified ramp raked by the walls and the Grande Caponière outwork; the easy-looking route was the deadliest.
