About Pont Vieux
A 14th-century stone bridge of twelve arches over the River Aude, once the only crossing to the Cité. Now pedestrian-only, it frames the classic floodlit view of the ramparts.
The Pont Vieux is a medieval stone bridge over the River Aude, linking the Bastide Saint-Louis with the hilltop Cité. Despite a persistent tradition crediting it to Saint Louis, the present bridge dates from the early 14th century, around 1315 to 1320. It carries a roadway on twelve semicircular arches of unequal span, set on piers with pointed cutwaters, and runs roughly 225 metres across the river.
For much of its history it was the only crossing to the Cité. Two arches collapsed and were rebuilt in 1456, and the bridge was restored in 1820. Classified as a Monument Historique in 1926, it is now reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. It offers the classic view of the fortified city and is a favourite spot at dusk, when the illuminated ramparts reflect in the Aude.
Did you know? Tourist lore credits Saint Louis with the bridge, but the fabric is early-14th-century, roughly 1315 to 1320. An earlier crossing is documented in 1184, when Roger Trencavel let citizens build one themselves.
