About Cité de Carcassonne
A double-walled medieval fortress town crowning a hill above the river Aude, ringed by fifty-two towers and carrying a famous, much-debated 19th-century restoration; UNESCO-listed since 1997 and free to enter.
The Cité de Carcassonne is a fortified upper town set on a hill above the river Aude, defended by two concentric rings of curtain wall that run roughly three kilometres and carry fifty-two towers. The inner ring preserves late-Roman masonry begun during the invasions of the third and fourth centuries; the outer ring was added in the thirteenth century under the French crown. Within the walls stand the Château Comtal and the former cathedral, now the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire.
Seat of the Trencavel viscounts, the Cité was besieged during the Albigensian Crusade and surrendered in August 1209, then passed to the royal domain in 1226. After 1659 it lost military value and decayed until a demolition decree of 1849 was reversed and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc began restoring it in 1853. His campaign saved the fortress but remains contested, especially the pointed slate tower roofs judged inauthentic to the south. UNESCO inscribed it in 1997.
Did you know? The whole fortress was once condemned: an 1849 demolition decree was overturned in 1850 after a campaign by the antiquary Cros-Mayrevieille and the writer Prosper Mérimée, then inspector of France's historic monuments.
