About St Mary's Church (Mariakirken)

Bergen's oldest surviving building still in daily use, a twin-towered Romanesque basilica built in soapstone about the mid-12th century, long known as the Hanseatic merchants' 'German church'.

Mariakirken, St Mary's Church, stands near Bryggen in the Dreggen area of central Bergen. It is generally described as the oldest surviving building in the city still in use, though its construction dates, roughly the 1130s to about 1180, are scholarly estimates rather than documented facts. The church is a two-towered, three-naved basilica built mainly in the Romanesque style, largely of soapstone, using at least three different types. Its eastern choir shows Gothic influence, linked to rebuilding after a fire in 1248.

From 1408 the church was taken over by Bergen's large German Hanseatic population and became popularly known as the German church. German-language services continued for centuries, and the building was not returned to ordinary parish use until 1874. Christian Christie led a major restoration from 1863 to 1876, and the church was closed again from 2010 to 2015 for further work. Among its furnishings is a richly decorated Baroque pulpit given by Hanseatic merchants.

Did you know? Mariakirken is usually called Bergen's oldest surviving building still in use. Because no records fix the date, scholars estimate it was built from around the 1130s and largely finished by about 1180.
