About Rosenkrantz Tower (Rosenkrantztårnet)

A layered fortified tower inside Bergenhus, fusing a 1270s royal keep with a Renaissance rebuild by governor Erik Rosenkrantz in the 1560s; today a museum with harbour views.

The Rosenkrantz Tower stands within Bergenhus Fortress at the entrance to Bergen's harbour. It is a composite structure. Its oldest part is a medieval keep built in the 1270s under King Magnus the Lawmender, into which an early-16th-century tower by Jørgen Hansson was later absorbed. The building takes its name and present form from Erik Rosenkrantz, governor of Bergenhus from 1560 to 1568, who rebuilt and enlarged it in the 1560s with the help of Scottish stonemasons.

The rebuilt tower combined a residence for the governor, dungeons on the ground floor and cannon positions on top. From the 1740s it served as a gunpowder magazine until the 1930s. The tower was severely damaged by the 1944 explosion of the ship Voorbode in the harbour and later restored. It has been open to the public in full since 1966 and is now a museum, managed among the Bergenhus fortress museums, with views over the harbour from its roof.

Did you know? The Rosenkrantz Tower is really three buildings in one: a 1270s royal keep, an early-1500s tower by Jørgen Hansson, and Erik Rosenkrantz's sweeping 1560s Renaissance rebuild, all fused into a single structure.
