About Bergenhus Fortress (incl. Håkon's Hall)
One of Norway's oldest and best-preserved fortresses, standing at the harbour mouth, home to the great medieval Håkon's Hall and still partly an active military area today.
Bergenhus Fortress stands at the entrance to Bergen's harbour and ranks among Norway's oldest and best-preserved fortifications. Its promontory, Holmen, was the royal seat of the Norwegian kingdom, first enclosed by stone walls in the 1240s. The centrepiece is Håkon's Hall, built around 1247 to 1261 under King Håkon Håkonsson and described as the largest secular medieval building in Norway. Its first documented use was on 11 September 1261, at the wedding of the king's son Magnus.
Bergen lost its place as the main royal residence after King Eirik Magnusson died in 1299. The fortress was captured and burnt by the Victual Brothers in 1429, and on 20 April 1944 the exploding cargo ship Voorbode devastated Håkon's Hall and the neighbouring Rosenkrantz Tower. The hall was restored and reopened on 11 September 1961, the 700th anniversary of its first use. It is administered in part by the Bergen City Museum and used for concerts and public events, while part of the complex remains under naval command.
