About Fish Market (Torget / Fisketorget)
Bergen's open-air fish and seafood market at the head of the harbour, a trading spot since medieval times and now a lively, tourist-heavy stop with a year-round indoor hall.
Torget, usually called Fisketorget, the Fish Market, occupies the square at the head of Bergen's Vågen harbour. The site has served as a trading place since early in the city's history, with a marketplace documented in the 13th century. Its fortunes were tied to Bergen's role as a Hanseatic hub for the North Atlantic fish trade from the 14th to the 16th century. The market lies directly across the water from Bryggen and beside the lower station of the Fløibanen funicular.
Today the stalls sell fresh and prepared seafood, from salmon and shrimp to crab and fish soup, alongside produce and souvenirs. The outdoor market is busiest in summer and is now strongly oriented towards visitors. An indoor food hall, Mathallen, opened on the site in 2012 and keeps the market running year-round, concentrating winter trade under one roof. Some vendors have historically offered whale and other unusual products, which visitors note as a controversial feature of the market.
Did you know? Across the water stands Bryggen, and right beside the market sits the lower station of the Fløibanen funicular, so the Fish Market makes a natural first stop on any walk through central Bergen.
