About Hanseatic Museum & Schøtstuene
The story of Bergen's German Hanseatic merchants, told inside their old assembly rooms, the Schøtstuene, while the historic Finnegården merchant house stays shut for a long restoration.
The Hanseatic Museum preserves the world of the German merchants who ran Bergen's Kontor, the Hanseatic League's trading office. Its main building is Finnegården, a wooden merchant tenement at the southern end of Bryggen, rebuilt as Finnegården 1a in 1704 after the great fire of 1702, and open as a museum since 1872. Its panelled rooms, closed bunk-beds and offices show how merchants and their apprentices lived and worked. The museum is run by Museum Vest.
Since 1 October 2018 Finnegården has been closed for a major restoration to replace its rotting wooden foundations and lift the building, a project reported to run until around 2027 and budgeted at roughly NOK 338 million. During the works the museum's public offering has moved to the Schøtstuene, the Hanseatic merchants' assembly and meeting halls at Øvregaten 50, a short walk uphill behind Bryggen and part of the museum since 1938. Nearby Bryggens Museum offers further Hanseatic and medieval context.
Did you know? Fire fear shaped everything here. Because open flames were forbidden in the timber merchant houses, the Schøtstuene assembly rooms were the only warm, hearth-lit spaces where the men could cook and meet.
