About Lille Lungegårdsvannet
A tidy octagonal lake at the heart of Bergen, ringed by Byparken, the KODE museums and the city library, with a fountain and a faint tidal pulse.
Lille Lungegårdsvannet, known locally as Smalungeren, is a small freshwater lake in the centre of Bergen. Roughly octagonal, it covers about 20,500 square metres, measures around 215 metres at its longest and 150 at its widest, and is ringed by some 700 metres of shoreline. A large decorative fountain stands in its central part. Once an arm of the fjord connected to Store Lungegårdsvannet and the Puddefjord, it was much larger before land reclamation straightened its sides as the city expanded.
In 1926 the strait linking it to Store Lungegårdsvannet was removed and replaced by an underground culvert, though the lake's level still fluctuates slightly with the tide. It lies within Byparken, the central city park, close to the Byparken light-rail stop, and the KODE art museums and the Bergen public library front its western and southern shores. Byparken's cast-iron music pavilion was a gift to the city from consul F.G. Gade in 1888.
Did you know? Though it looks landlocked, the lake still breathes with the sea: since 1926 an underground culvert has replaced the open strait to Store Lungegårdsvannet, yet its level still shifts with the tide.
