About Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Museum)

An open-air museum in Sandviken where some fifty wooden houses, rescued from demolition across Bergen, are rebuilt into the streets and square of an old timber town.

Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Museum) is an open-air museum in the Ytre Sandviken district, built around the old Elsesro estate. It gathers roughly 50 to 55 relocated wooden houses that depict Bergen in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, arranged into streets and a square with shops and workshops. Buildings threatened with demolition in central Bergen were dismantled and re-erected here, broadly between 1945 and 1981. The museum was founded in 1949, while its supporting association dates to 1934.

The Elsesro summer house at the heart of the site was built in the late 18th century by shipbuilder Rasmus Rolfsen. Architect and antiquarian Kristian Bjerknes directed the museum from 1941 to 1971. Part of Bergen City Museum, the site has an English-style garden, and during the summer season costumed actors and guides bring the town to life. It lies about 3 to 4 kilometres from the city centre, roughly 10 to 20 minutes away by bus.

Did you know? The houses are refugees from the wrecking ball: between about 1945 and 1981, timber buildings facing demolition in central Bergen were taken apart and rebuilt here, forming a town that never actually stood together.
