About Fløibanen Funicular & Mount Fløyen
A steep little funicular hauls you from the heart of Bergen up Mount Fløyen in minutes, delivering the classic view over the harbour, the rooftops and the surrounding peaks.
The Fløibanen is a funicular railway that links central Bergen with the summit of Mount Fløyen, one of the seven mountains traditionally said to surround the city. Its lower station stands at Vetrlidsallmenningen, a short walk from Bryggen, and its metre-gauge track runs 848 metres up a slope that reaches a gradient of about 26 degrees. The upper station sits roughly 320 metres above sea level, with the mountain rising to around 400 metres.
First proposed by Bergen politician John Lund in 1895, the line opened on 15 January 1918 and has since carried passengers through five generations of cars, the latest introduced in 2022. Two cars, named Rødhette and Blåmann, work the line and each hold about 120 passengers. Close to two million people ride it each year. The summit offers a viewpoint, a restaurant, walking trails and open country beyond.
Did you know? The two funicular cars are named after fairy-tale figures: Rødhette, Little Red Riding Hood, for the red one, and Blåmann, Blue Man, for the blue. A public competition chose both names.
