About Troldhaugen (Edvard Grieg's Villa)

The summer home of composer Edvard Grieg, where his lakeside villa, his tiny composing hut and his cliff-cut grave sit above the water in a wooded park south of Bergen.

Troldhaugen was the home of the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and his wife, the soprano Nina Grieg. The timber villa was completed in 1885 to a design by Grieg's cousin, architect Schak Bull, and stands above Lake Nordåsvannet at Hop, south of Bergen and reachable by the Bybanen light rail. Nina Grieg named the place Troldhaugen, or Troll Hill. For the last twenty-two summers of Edvard Grieg's life, from 1885 until his death in 1907, the couple lived here each season.

Grieg composed in a small hut overlooking the lake, and the ashes of both Edvard and Nina rest in a tomb set into the cliff at the water's edge. The villa opened as a museum in 1928 and is now run as the Edvard Grieg Museum, part of the KODE museums. A modern exhibition building and café were added in 1995, and the Troldsalen concert hall, completed in 1985 and seating about two hundred, hosts a summer season of Grieg concerts.

Did you know? Nina Grieg named the property Troldhaugen, meaning Troll Hill, after the small valley beside it. The couple spent their last twenty-two summers here, from the villa's completion in 1885 until Edvard Grieg's death in 1907.
