About Stegastein Viewpoint
A cantilevered timber-and-steel walkway that juts thirty metres out over the Aurlandsfjord, ending in a clear glass screen some 650 metres above the water, and free to visit.
Stegastein is a viewpoint on the Aurlandsfjellet National Tourist Route above Aurland, in Vestland, Norway. The walkway extends about 30 metres out from the mountainside, some 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord, and is built of laminated pine and steel with a glass screen at its far end, where the deck curves down so the view opens straight out over the fjord. It overlooks the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord, and the village of Aurlandsvangen.
Completed in 2006, it was designed by the architects Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen and built as part of Norway's National Tourist Routes programme, commissioned by the national roads authority. Admission is free. Stegastein stands on County Road 243, on the Aurlandsfjellet mountain road, or Snøvegen, between Aurland and Lærdal, a scenic route that is closed in winter. In season it is reached by car or by the Flåm and Aurland shuttle bus.
Did you know? The walkway juts about 30 metres straight out from the mountainside, roughly 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord, and ends not in a wall but in a clear glass screen angled toward the water.
