About The Nærøyfjord

The narrowest, most dramatic arm of the Sognefjord system, squeezing to about 250 metres between kilometre-high cliffs; a UNESCO World Heritage site best seen by small sightseeing boat.

The Nærøyfjord is one of the innermost arms of the Sognefjord system in western Norway, branching off the Aurlandsfjord, which is itself a branch of the Sognefjord. It runs about 17 kilometres and narrows to roughly 250 metres at its tightest point, while the surrounding mountains rise to around 1,760 metres above the water. The village of Gudvangen lies at its inner, southern end, and Bakka is a small settlement on its shore.

In 2005 the Nærøyfjord was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the Geirangerfjord, as the property 'West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord'. UNESCO recognised it for its exceptional natural beauty and as an outstanding example of a fjord landscape shaped by glacial processes. The fjord is a popular sightseeing-cruise route, commonly sailed between Gudvangen and Flåm, and forms a classic leg of the 'Norway in a Nutshell' round trip from Bergen.

Did you know? At its narrowest the Nærøyfjord is only about 250 metres wide, with mountains rising toward 1,760 metres above it. It is not a single fjord but the innermost arm of the far larger Sognefjord system.
