About Mount Ulriken & the Ulriken643 Cable Car

Bergen's highest mountain, reached by cable car to 643 metres, offers the widest of all the city's views: rooftops, fjords and, on clear days, the open sea far beyond.

Ulriken is the highest of the seven mountains traditionally said to surround Bergen, rising to 643 metres southeast of the city centre in Vestland county. A cable car, the Ulriksbanen, branded Ulriken643, runs from a base station near Haukeland to the summit in roughly five to seven minutes. The top carries a tall broadcasting mast, a café and the Skyskraperen restaurant, and gives sweeping views over the city, the fjords and the sea.

The aerial tramway first opened in 1961. It closed in 1974 following an accident and, after further interruptions, reopened on 1 May 2009. From the summit the high Vidden plateau offers a popular hiking route across the ridge to Mount Fløyen, a walk of roughly thirteen to fifteen kilometres. The mountain's Isdalen slope is where an unidentified woman, known as the Isdal Woman, was found dead in 1970 in a case that remains officially unexplained.

Did you know? Ulriken is the tallest of Bergen's seven mountains at 643 metres, which the cable-car brand Ulriken643 wears as its name. On clear days the summit takes in the city, the fjords and the open sea.
