About Bergen Cathedral (Bergen domkirke)

Bergen's cathedral and the bishop's seat, a stone church rebuilt after fire upon fire since the 12th century, with a 1665 battle cannonball still lodged in its tower wall.

Bergen Cathedral, Bergen domkirke, is the seat of the Bishop of Bjørgvin in the Church of Norway. Its earliest historical records date to about 1181, when it was dedicated to Saint Olaf and known as Olavskirken. Under King Håkon Håkonsson, Franciscan friars took over the church and built a friary beside it. Sources give its consecration and first completion variously between about 1181 and 1250, and repeated rebuilding makes its true 'age' a matter of which fabric is meant.

Fire shaped the cathedral again and again. It burned in 1248 and 1270, with repairs financed by King Magnus the Lawmender, burned once more in 1463, and was not fully rebuilt until the 1550s. Blazes in 1623 and 1640 gave much of its present appearance, and the great Bergen fire of 1702 prompted further renovation. Built largely of stone, it reached broadly its current form by the mid-17th century. A cannonball from the 1665 Battle of Vågen remains embedded in its exterior tower wall.

Did you know? A cannonball said to come from the 1665 Battle of Vågen, an Anglo-Dutch sea fight in the harbour, is still lodged in the cathedral's tower wall, a traditional attribution rather than proven fact.
