About Zrinjevac

The best-loved square of Zagreb's Green Horseshoe, a shaded promenade under towering plane trees with a music pavilion, a historic weather column, fountains and the busts of famous Croats.

Zrinjevac, formally Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square, is the first and best-loved of the leafy squares of the Green Horseshoe, the U-shaped chain of parks that the nineteenth century laid out in Zagreb's Lower Town. Once a cattle market on the edge of town, it was named in 1866 for the Croatian ban Nikola Šubić Zrinski, who died defending the fortress of Szigetvár against the Ottomans in 1566.

Tall plane trees shade its central avenue, said to have been brought from Trieste. In the middle stands an ornate music pavilion of 1891, and nearby a meteorological column of 1884, with thermometer, barometer and clock. Busts of notable Croats line the walks, and the square is ringed by grand palaces, among them the Archaeological Museum and the Academy of Sciences and Arts.
