About The Stone Gate

The last medieval gate of the old upper town, now a candlelit shrine built into its vaulted passage, where a treasured image of the Virgin and Child draws Zagrebans to pray and give thanks.

The Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata) is the only surviving gate of the medieval walls of Gradec, the hilltop town that grew into Zagreb's Upper Town. The walls were required after King Béla IV granted Gradec the status of a free royal city in 1242, and the gate is thought to date from about 1266, though its present form is from the eighteenth century.

Its vaulted passage doubles as a chapel. Behind an ornate wrought-iron grille is a cherished old image of the Mother of God with the infant Jesus, honoured since a great fire of 1731, from which, by tradition, the little painting emerged unharmed. The walls are lined with votive plaques reading 'Hvala' (Thank you), and in 1991 the Mother of God of the Stone Gate was proclaimed patron of Zagreb.
