About Dolac Market
Zagreb's best-known farmers' market, a sea of bright red parasols on a raised terrace above the main square, where village farmers sell fresh produce and the bronze Kumica honours the city's market women.
Dolac is Zagreb's best-known farmers' market, set on a raised terrace just up a flight of steps from Ban Jelačić Square, between the old towns of Gradec and Kaptol. It was opened in 1930, to a design by the architect Viktor Kovačić, and its open-air stalls shaded by bright red parasols have become a symbol of the city. Below the terrace, a covered hall holds butchers, fishmongers and dairy sellers.
Farmers from the surrounding villages bring very fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, and in the covered market you can buy the local sir i vrhnje, fresh cheese with cream. The stallholders are the kumice, the market women, honoured by a bronze statue of a kumica with a basket on her head. From the stalls you look straight up at the cathedral spires and the baroque tower of St Mary's Church.
