About Tkalčićeva Street

Zagreb's liveliest street, a pedestrian run of cafes and bars on the bed of a vanished stream that divided the two old towns, drove the first mills, and gave its 'Bloody Bridge' a grisly name.

Tkalčićeva Street, affectionately called Tkalča, is Zagreb's most popular street for a drink or a coffee, a mostly pedestrian run of cafes, bars and restaurants climbing north from near Ban Jelačić Square. It follows the bed of the Medveščak creek, which for centuries divided the clerical town of Kaptol from the merchant town of Gradec and drove the city's first watermills and workshops.

The stream was covered over at the end of the 1890s, and in 1913 the new street was named for the Zagreb historian Ivan Tkalčić. At its lower end is the Krvavi most, the 'Bloody Bridge', named for the old clashes between the two towns. A statue honours Marija Jurić Zagorka, Croatia's first woman journalist, and around 1900 the street was the city's notorious red-light district.
