About Zagreb Cathedral
The towering neo-Gothic cathedral on Kaptol, the tallest church in Croatia, with its famous twin spires; damaged in the 2020 earthquake, which toppled their tips, it is under long restoration while remaining open for prayer.
Zagreb Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and to Saints Stephen and Ladislaus, crowns the hill of Kaptol and is the tallest church in Croatia, its twin spires rising about 108 metres. The diocese was founded in 1094; the first cathedral here was destroyed in the Mongol invasion of 1242, rebuilt in Gothic form, and later ringed with defensive walls against the Ottomans, parts of which still stand.
After the earthquake of 1880 wrecked the old building, it was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style between 1880 and 1902 by the architect Hermann Bollé, who raised the two soaring spires. Inside lies the tomb of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, marked by a relief by Ivan Meštrović. In the earthquake of 2020 the spire tips fell, and the cathedral is now under a restoration not expected to finish before about 2030.
