About Croatian National Theatre

Zagreb's grand neo-Baroque opera and theatre house, a bright yellow landmark of 1895 opened by Emperor Franz Joseph, with Ivan Meštrović's famous fountain 'The Well of Life' before its doors.

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb (HNK), on Republic of Croatia Square, is the home of the country's national opera, ballet and drama, a company whose roots reach back to 1860. Its grand yellow building, designed by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer, who built theatres across Europe, is a jewel of neo-Baroque architecture, opened by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1895.

The theatre was built after the old house was damaged in the earthquake of 1880, on what was then the edge of town. Inside, the ceremonial curtain is Vlaho Bukovac's painting 'The Croatian National Revival'. In front of the theatre stands one of the city's best-loved sculptures, 'The Well of Life' (Zdenac života), carved by Ivan Meštrović in 1905, a ring of bronze figures leaning over a pool.

Did you know? The Croatian National Theatre's neo-Baroque building was designed by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer and opened by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1895; the resident company dates back to 1860.
