About Art Pavilion

The elegant golden-yellow exhibition hall on the Green Horseshoe, the oldest purpose-built gallery in southeastern Europe, whose iron frame first rose at the 1896 Budapest exhibition before coming to Zagreb by train.

The Art Pavilion (Umjetnički paviljon) stands on King Tomislav Square, facing the central railway station across the Green Horseshoe, a graceful golden-yellow hall crowned with a glass dome. It is the oldest purpose-built gallery in southeastern Europe and the only hall in Zagreb designed for large art exhibitions, opened in 1898.

Its story is unusual. Croatian artists exhibited at the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest in 1896 in a pavilion built on a prefabricated iron skeleton so that it could be moved afterwards. That frame was brought to Zagreb by train, and the firm of Fellner & Helmer, architects of the National Theatre, designed a new building around it. Badly damaged in the 2020 earthquake, the pavilion is under long restoration, so for now it can be admired from the outside.

Did you know? The Art Pavilion on King Tomislav Square is the oldest purpose-built gallery in southeastern Europe and the only hall in Zagreb designed for large exhibitions; it opened in 1898.
