About Maksimir Park
A vast and beautiful English-style park on the edge of Zagreb, among the earliest public parks in this part of Europe, with woods, meadows, lakes, follies, and the country's largest zoo at its edge.
Maksimir is a vast landscaped park on the eastern edge of Zagreb and one of the earliest public parks in this part of Europe. It was begun in 1787 by Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac, who gave it his name, and opened to the public in 1794. From 1839 Bishop Juraj Haulik, regarded as its true creator, remade it in the romantic English landscape style, with winding paths, broad meadows and a chain of lakes.
Among its trees stand charming follies: the round Echo Pavilion, the Vidikovac lookout, the Swiss House and a little Gothic chapel. The Mogila, a grassy mound, recalls a thousand years of the Croatian kingdom. At the park's edge is Zagreb Zoo, the largest in Croatia, opened in 1925. Woodpeckers and more than a hundred bird species live among the old oaks.
